Basic Soil Mix
A good cannabis soil mix should provide excellent drainage, retain enough moisture, and supply nutrients without becoming compacted. If you’re growing in a place where it’s legal, here’s a widely used mix for healthy plants.
Basic High-Quality Soil Mix (100 L total)
- 40 L peat moss or coco coir (holds moisture)
- 30 L high-quality compost or worm castings (nutrients and beneficial microbes)
- 30 L perlite or pumice (improves drainage and aeration)
Organic Amendments (per 100 L)
Mix in:
- 2 cups blood meal (nitrogen)
- 2 cups bone meal or fish bone meal (phosphorus and calcium)
- 2 cups kelp meal (potassium and micronutrients)
- 1 cup dolomitic lime (buffers pH and adds calcium/magnesium)
- 2 cups gypsum (additional calcium and sulfur)
- 2 cups basalt rock dust or glacial rock dust (trace minerals)
- 1–2 cups neem seed meal (slow-release nitrogen and pest suppression)
“Super Soil” Option
If you want to grow with only water for much of the plant’s life:
- Mix the ingredients above thoroughly.
- Moisten the soil until it’s damp but not soggy.
- Let it sit (“cook”) for 3–4 weeks, turning it weekly. This allows microbes to break down the amendments and prevents nutrient burn.
Ideal Soil Conditions
- pH: 6.2–6.8
- Drainage: Water should drain freely without pooling.
- Temperature: 20–26°C in the root zone is ideal.
- Watering: Let the top 2–3 cm of soil dry before watering again.
Seedlings
Young seedlings don’t need rich soil. A gentler mix works better:
- 50% coco coir or peat moss
- 30% perlite
- 20% worm castings
Begin feeding only after the plant has developed several sets of true leaves if the soil is lightly amended.
Flowering
As plants begin flowering, they generally need:
- Less nitrogen
- More phosphorus and potassium
- Consistent calcium and magnesium
If using organic soil, top-dressing with worm castings, compost, and a bloom amendment around the start of flowering can help maintain nutrient availability.
A well-built living soil can often produce excellent results with minimal bottled fertilizers, relying instead on healthy microbial activity and steady nutrient release.
